Baumholder 1961

the book leads up to the crisis when the Berlin Wall was built by East Germany in 1961 March 29, 2019
I was in Baumholder in 1960-62 stationed in the same Army intelligence unit as the author. The book captures the zany life of buddies dealing with the seriousness of their work and their off duty time partying, avoiding soldiers from the combat branches who like to fight, and chasing the local "bar girls", many of whom were East German spies. It struck me as entertaining and realistic. Reminds me a bit of "Catch 22" by Heller. I phoned the author and we agreed - "if you weren't there you probably wouldn't believe it".
Check out the novella.
